Custom Roll Labels in Canada: A Practical Packaging Guide

A good roll label starts with the container. Measure the usable surface, decide what the label needs to say, and describe where the package will be stored. Those three decisions matter more than choosing a shape from a screen.

This guide helps Canadian businesses choose custom roll labels for jars, bottles and takeaway packaging, prepare artwork, and ask the right questions before ordering.

A label can look generous on a flat proof and cramped once it curves around a bottle. A seal can look secure across a box lid yet lift where the cardboard bends. Treat the package and label as one small design project: check the fit on a real container before committing to a production run.

What are roll labels?

Roll labels are individual adhesive labels supplied on a continuous backing wound around a core. You peel off each label and apply it to your packaging. The roll format keeps repeat labels together and makes it convenient to work through a batch of jars, bottles, bags or boxes.

Roll supply does not automatically mean a roll is compatible with your labelling machine. If you use an applicator, confirm the core, maximum roll diameter, label spacing and unwind direction before ordering. A print file alone does not establish those requirements.

Choose the shape by what it needs to do

NEPS roll label formats: current catalogue options
Shape Available sizes A useful starting point
Circle 1″ to 4″ diameter in 0.5″ increments Lid branding, a compact logo or a bag closure
Square 1″ to 5″ in 0.5″ increments A balanced front label with a simple product message
Rectangle 3″ × 1″, 3″ × 2″, 4″ × 2″, 5″ × 2″, 5″ × 3″ A wider front panel or more room for product details

Square and rectangle options have a 0.125-inch rounded corner radius. The listed stock is 40lb with permanent adhesive, printed in full colour on one side. Available quantities are 500, 1,000, 2,500, 5,000, 10,000, 25,000 and 50,000 labels. Artwork is not included. Check the linked product page and confirm the specification for your order.

Measure jars and bottles before designing

Start with the straight section of the container. Keep labels away from shoulders, ridges and the curved base. A wide rectangle that sits neatly on a cylindrical jar may wrinkle on a tapered bottle because its top and bottom edges travel different distances.

Cut a piece of plain paper to the proposed size and tape it in place. Look at it from the front, rotate the container and check how much text disappears around the sides. For a lid label, leave space between the label edge and the rim. For a front label, make sure the product name stays visible without turning the bottle.

Estimate a full wrap width

This calculator is a planning aid for a straight cylindrical container. It estimates circumference minus a chosen gap; it does not confirm adhesion, printable size or a listed NEPS product.

Illustrative example: a 70 mm diameter container with a 3 mm gap needs approximately 216.9 mm (8.54″) of wrap width.

Formula: diameter × π − gap. Measure the usable height separately. This example is wider than the listed rectangle sizes, so ask NEPS about suitability and available options rather than ordering a standard size as a full wrap.

Match the label to the storage conditions

“Permanent adhesive” describes the adhesive category. It is not a promise that a label will withstand condensation, washing, freezing, oil or repeated handling. Tell us whether the package is glass, plastic, metal or cardboard, whether the surface is smooth or textured, and whether it is dry when labelled.

For refrigerated drinks, bathroom products or oily sauces, describe the actual exposure. Ask us to confirm a suitable stock and adhesive before proceeding. The standard product listings do not establish waterproof, dishwasher-safe, freezer-safe or direct food-contact performance.

A practical check is to apply a sample to the actual package and inspect the edges after it has experienced the intended conditions. Appearance immediately after application is only one part of that check.

Use takeaway seals with a clear purpose

A label across a lid or folded bag can carry your brand and help keep the package closed. Position it so enough adhesive touches each side of the opening. Avoid placing most of the label on a crease or a rough edge, where contact is limited.

Do not describe an ordinary packaging label as tamper-evident without a verified construction that supports that claim. If security is the purpose, tell us what must happen when the package is opened. That is a different requirement from adding a branded closure.

Make the artwork work at actual size

Give the product name priority, then organise the supporting information. A strong front label often needs less copy than the first draft. Move detailed instructions or secondary information to a separate panel where the package and applicable requirements allow it.

Supply the required print file with bleed and keep important text inside the safe area specified for your order. Do not guess those dimensions from another printer’s template. Use our Canva print export guide if you are preparing artwork there, then confirm the final template with NEPS.

Print a paper proof at 100% size. Check small text, line weights, contrast and the spelling of every product variant. If you include a QR code, scan a physical proof on the package; a code that works on a bright monitor may be harder to scan on a curved surface.

For food products, consult the Canadian Food Inspection Agency’s Industry Labelling Tool while preparing required label information. It provides guidance on topics such as bilingual labelling, ingredients, allergens and nutrition information. Requirements depend on the product; a print proof is not a compliance approval.

Plan quantities around products, not just the total

Separate your order by design and size before choosing a quantity. A total of 2,500 containers spread across five flavours is different from 2,500 identical labels. Ask how quantities and pricing apply to multiple artworks, rather than assuming several designs qualify as one run.

Allow time for measurements, artwork changes and approval before production. The circle label page currently lists 7–10 business days; confirm the timing for your specific shape, quantity and deadline. Include delivery time in your plan instead of treating a production estimate as an arrival date.

Common roll label questions

Can I use the same label on jars and bottles?

Possibly, but test both containers. Differences in curvature, material and usable height can make the same size fit differently. Choose a shared size only after checking both applications.

Are NEPS standard roll labels waterproof?

The current standard listings specify 40lb stock and permanent adhesive. They do not verify waterproof performance. Describe moisture exposure and ask us to confirm a suitable option.

Can roll labels be used with an automatic applicator?

Confirm machine compatibility before ordering. Provide core size, roll diameter limits, label spacing and unwind direction from the equipment requirements.

What is the minimum listed quantity?

The circle, square and rectangle product pages list quantities starting at 500 labels. Confirm how multiple designs are handled when requesting an order.

Bring the package into the conversation

Explore NEPS roll labels, or send us your packaging details. Include the container dimensions, a photo, the intended use, quantity by design and your deadline. Those details let us discuss fit and print requirements with you before the artwork becomes an expensive assumption.
