How to Download Canva Files for Print: PDF, Bleed & CMYK
Finished your design in Canva? Before you send it to print, choose PDF Print, enable Crop marks and bleed, and select CMYK if your account offers it. Before exporting, check the finished size, backgrounds and text placement.
Before You Download
- Correct finished size
- Backgrounds extended into the bleed
- Text and logos safely inside the trim edge
- PDF Print selected
- Crop marks and bleed enabled
- CMYK selected when available
- All required pages included
1. Check Your Design Size
Start with the size of the product you are ordering. For example, a standard business card is 3.5" × 2". Check your selected product size before designing: other card formats have different dimensions.
Do not add bleed to the canvas dimensions yourself and then add it again when downloading. If you are using a printer-supplied template, follow its instructions.
2. Add Bleed and Keep Text Away from the Edge
In Canva, open File → Settings → Show print bleed. Some editor versions place this under Rulers and guides. Extend backgrounds and edge-to-edge photos beyond the trim boundary to fill the bleed area.
Bleed is extra artwork outside the finished edge. It helps prevent unwanted white slivers after cutting. Crop marks identify the trim position. Keep names, contact details and logos inside the finished edge, with enough space around them.

3. Download as PDF Print
- Open Share → Download.
- Under File type, choose PDF Print.
- Enable Crop marks and bleed.
- Choose CMYK under Colour profile if available.
- Select the pages you need, including the front and back of a double-sided design.
- Click Download, then open the saved PDF to check it.
Canva identifies PDF Print as its higher-resolution PDF option for printing. Export settings cannot restore detail missing from a blurry original photo or logo.

Which Settings Should I Use?
| Setting | Choose | Why |
|---|---|---|
| File type | PDF Print | A PDF intended for professional printing |
| Crop marks and bleed | On for trimmed, edge-to-edge designs | Allows backgrounds to reach the cut edge |
| Colour profile | CMYK when available | Helps you preview colours intended for ink |
| Pages | All required print pages | Includes both sides of your card |
| Flatten PDF | Off unless requested | Check with your printer before changing it |
4. Check the PDF Before Sending It
Review spelling, phone numbers, website addresses, page order and image sharpness. Confirm the intended finished size, and check that no important content sits on the trim edge. Upload the PDF through the relevant NEPS product page or contact us if you need help.
Common Canva Printing Questions
What if CMYK is not available?
CMYK downloads depend on your Canva plan. If you only see RGB, download PDF Print and let us know. We can advise on file preparation. Very bright screen colours can look more muted in print; choosing CMYK does not guarantee an exact screen match.
Should I select Flatten PDF?
Leave it off unless your print provider requests it. If your PDF has a rendering problem, contact us before changing this setting, especially for artwork needing editing or specialty finishes.
Can I use a JPG or PNG instead?
For most business cards and other printed layouts, send the PDF Print file. A screenshot or small image may not contain enough detail for sharp type and logos.
Can Canva artwork be used for raised gloss business cards?
Yes, Canva can be used for the printed design. Gloss Emboss Business Cards also require a separate mask identifying the raised UV areas. A shiny effect shown on screen does not create that production file. Ask our team for help preparing the mask.
A Business Card Example
Ordering a 3.5" × 2" card? Set the Canva design to that finished size, create the front and back as two pages, extend backgrounds into the bleed, and download both pages together as PDF Print. Choose the matching size when placing your order.
For gloss emboss cards, the print artwork and raised gloss mask must line up. Keep a version of your design that our team can use to prepare that mask if you need help.
